Moving Checklists
Not sure how to organize your moving timeline? Check out our moving checklist below to break the process down into the months and weeks preceding your moving day.
2 Months Before Moving
Create a moving binder. Use it to organize all your receipts, a moving schedule, a list of things to pack, and any other information you need for your move.
If possible, get measurements of the rooms and doorways of your new home to make sure large pieces of furniture will fit inside. Draw up a floor plan and indicate placement of furnishings to reduce time and frustration.
Tour every room of your current house and decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity.
Prepare to pack.
1 Month Before Moving
Arrange to connect your utilities to your new home and disconnect utilities in your previous home. Discontinue delivery services.
Call doctors and dentists. They may recommend a colleague near your new home. Get copies of renewable prescriptions and request medical and dental records.
Arrange transfer of school records and personal insurance records.
Fill out a change of address form at your local Post Office or online. Notify magazines to which you subscribe. Note: You must fill out a change-of-address form for each person receiving mail at your address.
Transfer bank accounts, and ask your local credit bureau to transfer your records to your new city. If you have pets, request their records from the veterinarian.
2 Weeks Before Moving
Collect things you’ve loaned, and items at the dry-cleaner, in lay-away, in cold storage, in a safety deposit box, etc., and return things you have borrowed.
Protect your shipment from damage by disposing of flammables such as gasoline, fireworks, matches, cleaning fluids, bottled gas, aerosols, acids, and caustic drain cleaners, etc.
Take the time to fill out “Welcome to Your New Home” card for the new owners.
1 Week Before Moving
Set aside maps, games, snacks, flashlight, and other items you’ll take in your car.
Start packing suitcases and boxes.
Defrost, clean and dry refrigerator and chest freezer.
Dispose of any personal property or debris left behind after packing.
To receive the entire balance of a deposit on an apartment, most landlords require renters to return the property to its original condition with reasonable wear and tear (depending on how long you lived there). Check your lease or contact your landlord for more information.
Moving Day!
Today’s the day! There has been a lot of hard work and planning leading up to this day. Here are some practical tips to help make the day go as smooth as possible.First, try to breathe. Yes, it’s hectic, but Hoosier Mover has you covered. Our crews are highly trained and will help you every step of the way.
Make sure you are available the entire day of packing and loading.
If packers are packing high-value items – antiques, works of art, furs, etc. be available to view the packing. Money, jewelry, coins, etc. cannot be packed.
Prior to the arrival of the packing or loading crew, make sure to keep items you will be taking with you in a separate place so the crew does not accidently pack or load them.
Check drawers, cabinets, closets for items that may have been missed during packing.
Do a final walk-through of the house, garage and yard to make sure nothing has been missed once the loading is complete.
Turn off lights, lock windows and doors.
Confirm the destination address and directions with the driver and confirm with him that he is aware of how to reach you en route and at your destination.
